BenchIT Version 6

It's finally done. It took us almost 6 month of consolidation but now we have a release that deserves the name stable compared to what we've started with.

We fixed all the major bugs and found numerous new ones (and fixed them too) while fixing the others. Many kernels from older releases were ported to our new interface. A special set of x86 specific kernels can be downloaded separately (see X86membench).

The reference run has made it into the release and we provide a script "reference_run.sh" to run all these kernels with one single command. See the README on how to set up your system for that (it only takes a few small preparational steps).

An still experimental feature is the hardware detection that is further described in the README but helps a lot whith the LOCALDEF files.

We hope that you as a user learn as much while using BenchIT as we learned and had fun in the making.

New Release of BenchIT-Web

Today, a new version of BenchIT web entered production. Although there were some great changes, most of them are some kind of under the hood. What's important for users is:

* Filesharing and fileshare requests are now logged with a timestamp for each single file. This'll allow us to introduce time-based statistics in the future.

* An email messenging component has been included, the BenchIT team is now able to inform all users of important changes per mail, given a valid email address is present in your account.

* You will now be notified about approval or deny of your file share requests. Additionally, the administrator can send a comment along with the notification.

* The sites layout has been improved to also work on next generation browsers (like Firefox 3) and some nifty CSS3 effects are used, if your browser supports them.

* QuickViews of a plot now show a note, if the file could'nt be plotted for some reason. This is most likely due to corrupt files.

* The sites overall performance has been increased due to several modifications we made.

We have set up a secure HTTPS version of BenchIT-Web, so all your transfered data is protected from eavesdropper. You can access BenchIT.org as usual by www.benchit.org, or by the new https://www.benchit.org. The normal http-version does redirect your login process to the secured one. So from that on you will use a secure session and all data transfered (passwords, result files, plots, etc.) will be transmitted safely.
If your browser keeps complaining about our Certificate Issuer (the "Technische Universitaet Dresden" - home of BenchIT) you can obtain the necessary certificates from here:
TU Dresden CA
DFN PKI CA
Deutsche Telekom Root CA

Our server maintenance has been finished successfully, benchit.org is back on duty.

We have updated the website and incorporated several new features:

* The frontpage has been reworked and has now a direct link to download benchit.

* We're using the mootools.net-javascript framework now, and have used it to enable graphical previews of all result files as well as severall descriptive tooltips across the site. Note that you have to enable javascript to benefit from www.benchit.org's new features.

* Registered users are now able to save the complete plot including all plotsettings for further views. For this a new subsection of "Analysis/Plot" named "Stored Plots" was created.

Website Update

Our website team has introduced a new feature for plotting files: the Quick Analysis Wizard. This wizard allows users to select files for plotting based on several major key attributes like processor name, host name, processor clock rate, kernel name or used compiler. You can select one or more parameters for every attribute, thus allowing a fast comparison of for example AMD Opteron and Intel Itanium running a specific matrix multiplication kernel. JavaScript driven functions allow a fast selection and filtering process and plotting is done using default options, so you don't have to bother with functions or legends settings. (Although you can disable this, having full control over your plot.)

The second news is: We have improved the Plot Profiler with an update function, so you can redefine / alter existing profiles.

random number generator

A random number generator was added to BenchITs interface. If a kernel uses random numbers to generate input data and the random numbers do not have to meet special requirements it is recommended to make use of this new feature. This improves the comparability between different compilers and compiler versions. If the random number generator is initialized with a fix value the same sequence of pseudo random numbers is used each run. This ensures that data dependend algorithms (searching, sorting, ...) allways show exactly the same behaviour. This avoids inexplicable differences between measurements due to different built in random number generator functions. Details on how to use the random number generator can be found in our Wiki.

GUI: New Server Values

As part of our preceding server relocation the IP address of www.benchit.org and the path to the GUI-Updates have been changed.
To continue using the online features of the GUI we advise you to update your GUI configuration.
Follow these 6 simple steps to change the values of "serverIP" and "updateServer":

1. In your BenchIT folder, type "./GUI.sh", if the GUI doesn't run already
2. Select "Setup" -> "Preferences" from the menu
3. In the upcoming window, select the "Network" tab
4. Change the value of "serverIP" to "141.30.61.99" (without quotes)
5. Change the value of "updateServer" to "http://www.benchit.org/downloads/update/" (without quotes)
6. Click "Okay"

Currently, it is not possible to have a GUI update change this values, but we're working on a method to auto update server related values.
Until then, please update your configuration manually.

We rewrote parts of the structure inherent to all COMPILE.SH scripts and along with that eridecated some bugs in the chain of scripts used along the run-way. By the way our (kernel)tree grew taller in terms of more available kernel-sections. Pay especially attention to the io-sections as there will be imports of a few kernels already kown to those who are with us since the good ol' src2-times. And as always there are myriads of updates ready to be deployed to your version of our lovely GUI - just watch out for the red button in the upper right corner . . .
This update is more than a simple bugfix release. We completely replaced the userinterface and changed its basic structure.

The system is currently in beta-testing stage, so pleas note that is likely that errors might occur. Please report all found bugs to our Bug-Tracking-System found in the Communication Area.

The BenchIT Web Interface was updated to version 1.3 on November 14, 2003.
New feature is an optional context help bar and some bugfixes.

Because there were also changes in the database, you have to re-request publication of files for the single groups. Sorry for that.
